FAQ - Foal

How can I register my foal?

What do I need to do first?

As soon as you have had your mare bred, please instruct the respective stallion keeper or veterinarian to send the Breeding Certificate [Deckschein] to the Oldenburg Horse Center Vechta (Grafenhorststr. 5, 49377 Vechta).

As soon as we have received the Breeding Certificate [Deckschein] for your mare, we will send you a Notification of Foaling form [Abfohlmeldung] for the foal expected.

What should I do when the foal is born?

Please fill out the bottom part of your Notification of Foaling form and send this back to us. The following information is important for this:

  • Sex / date of birth / color of foal
  • Registration number of the keeper of the animal as well as the name and address of the keeper, i.e. the facility where your foal is kept
  • Application to register the foal: Please enter the desired registration event here. You will find a list of these events on our website under the heading ‘Breeding/Events’ as well as in the Verband magazine Oldenburger International. If you would prefer your own yard event, please check the box for this. If you have decided on a yard event, please state exactly where the foal is located as well as the telephone numbers of a contact person at this location on the Notification of Foaling form.

What is the next step in registering my foal?

  • Your foal will be listed in the official registration catalogue for the registration event you have selected. You’ll find the catalogue on our website. Please bring your mare along with your foal to the desired registration event and once you have arrived, get in touch with our registration commissioner at the event.

  • If your foal is not located in Germany, we will get in touch with you as soon as we have planned a tour near you in your country.

What is an Equine Passport and when will I be issued this passport for my foal?

  • The Equine Passport (EQP) is a document that contains the pedigree and the breeding performance record of the horse. The passport is the property of the breeding society and always belongs with the horse. If there is a change in ownership of the horse, the EQP is to be given to the new owner. At the death of the horse, the EQP must be returned to the breeding society.
  • As soon as you have paid the invoice for the registration of your foal and we have received undisputed results of the DNA analysis  (after approx. six to eight weeks), the passport and the Certificate of Ownership [Eigentumsurkunde] for your foal will be sent to you by mail.
  • An EQP will only be sent to the registered owner of the mare.

How much does registration cost?

Please look at the schedule of fees on our website (FAQ/Verband/Fees) to see which costs apply for the registration of your foal.

What happens at a registration event and how do I have to present my foal?

  • The foal will receive a microchip.
  • Several hairs will be taken from the tail or mane of the foal for DNA analysis.
  • If there is still no DNA result for the dam, several hairs from the mane of the mare will be taken.
  • The markings of the foal will be recorded and the diagram checked or created.
  • During the award of premiums, the foal is presented in a walk and trot running loose with the mare in hand.
  • The foal and the mare should be braided.
  • The mare should be presented with a bridle.

How do I present my foal?

  • Braided
  • The foal must be presented with a halter while data on the foal is being recorded and the foal is chipped. At the events where premiums are awarded, the foal must be presented to the Evaluation Committee running loose without a halter.

You do not need to braid your mare and foal for a yard event.

When does my foal receive a foal premium?

Foals, who receive the Oldenburg Foal Premium award on a registration event, meet the Oldenburg breeding goal in terms of type, conformation and movement.
